Taylor Swift’s three year long hiatus was broken last month when she released the single “Look What You Made Me Do,” as well as an accompanying music video.

The song is a leap in a completely new genre for the artist, who, in her decade long career, has dabbled in country, pop, and even, briefly, hip hop (I’m looking at you, “Thug Story”.) The new single has accumulated a lot of negative responses, with many critics stating that it is the worst song she has ever released and that she has had a mental breakdown. Many even said that parts of her song were direct attacks at her enemies, including Kanye West, Katy Perry, and Kim Kardashian.

However, I am here to explain to you why this song is a much needed resurrection for Swift, and why you should be listening to it on repeat.

Firstly, the song is not mocking anyone but Taylor herself. With the endless snake references in the video, the many appearances of “past” Taylors, and the infamous “Sorry, the old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now” line, she is showing that she has heard and seen the thousands of shady comments and she understands why people are not in love with her anymore. The innocent, guitar-playing Swift has run her course, and the new Taylor is edgier and more on par with current music trends.

Secondly, this song is a BOP. The music charts do not lie, people.
