Boys of Fall

The Abilene Cowboys took the field Friday, August 25th for yet another gatorade scrimmage.  The Cowboys will be a very young team, but have the potential to contend for a fourth straight NCKL title.  The Cowboys return eight seniors this year, four of whom are returning starters.  They lost quite a bit of talent from last season, including many, now collegiate, athletes who have gone on to excel in their respective sports.

Abilene will look for a new quarterback to lead the offense this year, and the contenders for the spot are senior Trevor Casteel and junior James Mayden. Seniors Trey Hoerner and Dominick Campbell return in the backfield for the Cowboys.  The offensive line, led by lone returning starter sophomore Kade Funston, will be inexperienced, but looking to show what they can do this season.  The Cowboys are experienced at the tight end position as they return seniors Tucker Robinson and junior Preston Boyd.

Abilene should have a solid defensive unit again this season, led by many hardworking athletes from the senior and junior class.  On the defensive line, the Cowboys will return Robinson and Riekman.  Leading the linebackers this year will be Hoerner, along with Boyd and junior Logan Anguiano.  Campbell returns at cornerback, along with junior Danny Espinoza.  Casteel will play on both sides of the ball, as he will have to start at free safety.  Mayden will most likely start at strong safety, with Dakotah Whiteley contending as well.

There will be many new faces starting this year for the Cowboys, but they have the work ethic to put together another good season behind head coach Steve Simpson.  Senior Tucker Robinson believes, “We have a very young team this year, but we’re gaining experience and hope to climb to the top of the NCKL as the season progresses.”  The Cowboys will take the field on September 1st for the first home game of the season against the TMP Monarchs.
