Social Media:  a world-wide hub for loss of social skills and a major factor in depression

I have a bone to pick with possibly the most popular thing across the world. I hate social media, and here’s why… According to a story published by The Washington Post, an in-depth story about “kids these days,” the average teenager spends a mind-boggling 9 hours per day using social media. This is a big-time problem. Social media can potentially negatively impact the way that you view yourself and also affects the way you interact with others… If you let it. A recent study by the Harvard Business Review concluded that liking, posting, and updating statuses on Facebook led to lower mental health for those who used it more frequently. Other social media like Instagram and Snapchat may very well be affecting you in the exact same way.

The study monitored the correlation between the well-being of 5,208 adults and their use of Facebook over a two year period when each participant averaged about 60 minutes of Facebook a day. The study considers the overall well-being of a person to include life satisfaction, self-reported mental health, self-reported physical health, and body-mass index.

On top of its negative effects on the mind, social media also changes the way people interact with others. In a New York Behavioral article, it is also noted that people who spend a lot of time on social media may lose out on learning valuable face-to-face social skills, including the ability to recognize important social cues. The overusage of social media is ruining today’s youth and I simply can’t stand it.
