On Wednesday January 10, Calista Preston led an American Red Cross blood drive at Abilene High school. In order for the blood drive to happen Calista had to find donors and volunteers. The benefits to running the drive is you get to help save lives and qualify to apply for a scholarship. If you are interested in running a drive here at Abilene High School in the future you must talk to Mrs. Burton. In total 47 pints were donated; only 2 away from her goal. She stated there were no problems except one Power Red Donation got contaminated so it was unable to be used and did not count towards her goal. A Power Red Donation is similar to a whole blood donation, except a special machine is used to allow you to safely donate two units of red blood cells during one donation while returning your plasma and platelets to you. Calista says she feels they stayed on track through out the day and never got behind. Her advice to those who run a drive in the future is to get started early and get the word out about the drive as often as you can. The next blood drive will be on March 13th so go and donate if you can and save lives!
