The Abilene Cowboys saddled up and took on the Marysville Bulldogs on January 5th, 2018. The main focus of the Cowboys was defense, and to shut the NCKL leading scorer Gabe Pieschl down. This game would boost the Cowboys at the top of the race for NCKL if they won. The battle of the top teams of NCKL was definitely one for the books. Heading into overtime after a thrilling fourth quarter which the cowboys had to claw their way from a huge deficit in which they had caused turnovers and only had one player from Marysville score in double figures. Then with about 15 seconds left score was 48 to 46 Marysville was up. Abilene needed a bucket, they called a timeout and set up a play, and with about nine seconds Noah Wildman sinks a layup over to defenders to tie the game at 48 and send it to overtime. Gabe Pieschl led the game in all scoring with 27, he was the only player to score double figures in points for Marysville. The leading scorer for Abilene was Travis Beetch with 17. Abilene had three players in double figure scoring, Tucker Robinson with 13 and Preston Boyd with 14. The Cowboys would end up winning 60-54. This win places the cowboys tied atop the NCKL with Wamego at 3-0 and pushes them to 4-3 on the season. The Cowboys will retake to the court on Friday the 12th to play versus the 1-5 Clay Center Tigers.
