Cowgirls Take 3rd at SIT

The Abilene Cowgirls took third in the Salina Invitational Tournament that took place from January 18th to January 20th. Their first victory was over Buhler on Thursday, January 18th in a defensive battle. Junior guard Hannah Willey led the Cowgirls in scoring as she dropped 19 points in a 45-36 victory to advance to the semifinals. After a tough night shooting on Thursday, the Cowgirls faced a tough 5A opponent on Friday in the Salina Central Mustangs. After falling into a 27-16 hole at half, Abilene cut the lead to single digits in the second half but fell short, losing to Central 52-40. Willey and junior Sydney Burton led the team in scoring with 16 and 15 points that game. On Saturday, the Cowgirls played in the third place game against Salina South where they defeated the Lady Cougars 50-36 in a game that the Cowgirls dominated. Willey and Burton led the team in scoring, combining for 28 points in a strong team performance. Both were selected to the all-tournament team in a successful weekend for the Cowgirls. Willey stated, “I was proud of the way we worked hard and showed effort against those bigger schools.”
