On February 23rd the Abilene Cowboy Wrestling team traveled 30 minutes west on I-70 to the Tony’s Pizza Events Center in Salina,KS , to once again compete in the KSHSAA Class 4A State Wrestling Championships. The Cowboys took five wrestlers to Salina, that included seniors Trevor Casteel, Trey Hoerner, juniors Dakotah Whiteley and Dakota Laun, and lone sophomore Will Stroda.

At the 113lb division Will Stroda started off the first day with two pins to advance to the semifinals, however after a difficult match versus a very strong opponent Will was defeated 1-9. However on the backside Will was able to advance to the 3rd place match with a 6-0 win in the consolation semifinals, and in the third place match was able to win in a erratic 2-1 victory that went into overtime.

In the 132lbs division Trevor Casteel began the competition with a 8-0 win, and won in the  quarterfinals with an 8-6 sudden victory (sudden victory is an overtime period in which the first wrestler to score wins the match). In the semifinals match, Trevor was unable to continue in the frontside of the bracket and lost a closely contested match 3-4. On the backside however, Trevor won his consolation semifinals match with a quick pin of 1:33, and then would go on to defeat and opponent from Frontenac 10-3 to take home the bronze.

At the 160lbs division Dakota Laun wan unable to win his first match vs the eventual state champ at 160lbs losing by pin in 5:42, and his second match Dakota was defeated in another close match 0-2.

In the 170lbs division Dakotah Whiteley was able to win his first match by pinning his opponent in 2:43, but in his next match was unable to advance on the frontside and lost by fall. On the backside Dakotah won his next match 4-0, and in his consolation quarterfinals match(match that would advance to placing) Dakotah who was down 0-10 was able to comeback and pin his opponent and advance to the consolation semis. Dakotah would unfortunately fall 1-9, but in the 5th place match he was able to defeat NCKL opponent Atreyu Hornbeak from Marysville by pin in 1:22, and leave with a win and a fifth place medal.

In the 182lbs division Trey Hoerner started his tournament with a  victory by pin in 1:23 and then a 9-2 decision against the 2nd ranked opponent in 4A before the tournament. He then advanced to the 182lbs finals with a 3-0 win in the semifinals. Attempting to repeat as 4A champion at the same weight, Hoerner was able to continue his dominance at the 182lbs division and repeated as champion winning the match 7-4.

The Cowboys would finish the day in 6th place as a team with 73.0 points, regardless of only bringing five wrestlers. Congratulations to the Cowboy wrestling team on a successful season.
