It was a rough fall for Abilene’s varsity scholars bowl team on Thursday where they competed against a number of other schools in the district at Abilene High School. Abilene’s best of the best varsity scholars—represented by Seth Bielefeld, Elise Jones, Kyler Schardien, Jackson Welsh, Ben Wright, and Nick Wright—lost five of their six preliminary rounds in pool play, and therefore did not qualify for the finals round. Doing so would have allowed them the opportunity to compete at state championship once more, where they received fifth place last year. Wamego and Hays, lead by Clay Center, were the top three varsity teams that will now advance to the state scholars bowl tournament. As said by junior varsity team member Jackson Welsh: “We did our best and that’s what counts.” It was a good fight on Abilene’s part, but even the greatest fall short every now and then.
