If there’s one thing the Cowboys tennis team knows, it’s winning titles. The last time that  Abilene failed to take home the NCKL title was in 2007. Head Coach Mike Jantz said,“I’m excited for the boys to get out and compete this season. We will need to work hard and improve every day if we want to compete for another NCKL title.” This year, the squad is short on numbers, but will be in competition for an eleventh straight NCKL title.

Top varsity returners from last year’s singles players are seniors Jase West and Brayden Mohn. West placed 4th at state last year in doubles with 2017 graduate Jacob Berven. Varsity doubles returners are juniors Luke Kohler and Cody Schiffner. West and Kohler have been working hard in the offseason as they travel to Salina year-round to work on their game at an indoor facility.

The Cowboys have a heavy junior class this season, as they return Wyatt Davis, Tim Barbieri, Travis Luthi, Mark Cooper, and Ethan Faunce. Davis and Barbieri played solid last season in JV doubles, and are looking to take their game to the varsity level. Barbieri said, “Me and my boy Wyatt are looking to make it to state in doubles this year.” Sophomore Landen Fisher will also compete for a varsity spot this season.

The Cowboys began practice on Monday, February 26th and will work to prepare for the first varsity meet on Thursday, March 29th, which will take place in Abilene at 3:30 PM. According to senior leader Jase West, the Cowboys are ready to work hard and compete for an eleventh straight NCKL title. Will the Cowboys win yet another league title? Only time will tell.
