After winning NCKL in men’s and women’s track and field, the expectations are high for the Abilene Track team. This should not be a problem, as both girls and boy’s team have many returning state qualifiers from last year. The 4x800m boy’s relays should be very competitive, after qualifying for state last spring, with senior Ben Wright, and junior Damian Hartman returning with high hopes to once again compete at the state meet in Wichita, Kansas on the 25th and 26th of May. Intermediate hurdler Dominick Campbell will also be returning for his senior campaign after placing fourth last season at the state meet in the 300m hurdles. Preston Boyd and Dakotah Whitley will also be returning as they were both state qualifiers in their field event. Boyd who qualified in discus missed out on placing by just a few feet, will look to stand on the podium this season during his junior year.

For the Cowgirls, they have five returning state qualifiers and look to dominate the NCKL once again. Senior Elise Jones looks to have a stong year throwing the shot put and discus. Juniors Sydney Burton, Abby Barnes, and sophomores Savannah Stout, and Beth Holmes are also returning and plan to qualify for state once again in the 4x800m, especially after they set the school record last year. Holmes who placed fourth in the 300m intermediate hurdles at the state meet in her freshman season, hopes to stand atop the podium come May.

The fast approaching season looks bright for bother the boys and girls team. The team’s first meet takes place on March 27th at Smoky Valley in Lindsborg.
