Bringing in the new year, record snowfall fell in Abilene on Saturday, January 4th. The 16.4 inches of snow that Abilene experienced were the most in the area since 1900. The snowfall eventually led to AHS canceling school for three days after winter break, citing unideal road conditions as the reason why. As most can assume, high school students being locked inside for several days led to a plethora of solutions for the boredom caused by isolation.
One of the more unorthodox trends that began during the winter break was started by a member of our AHS wrestlers. Dayven Cuba, a sophomore at AHS, recorded himself in a singlet, while running into the snow outside his backdoor and doing snow angels in it. These actions were a part of a common, annual challenge that most AHS wrestlers take part in when it snows.
“It’s that time of year, so you know we have to do the singlet snowman challenge,” sophomore Dayven Cuba said on his Snapchat story before diving in the snow.
A wrestler that takes part in this trend must do the same as Dayven did while “nominating” others to do the challenge. Other AHS students joined in the fun as well. They used Snapchat to share their gutsy antics while nominating others to follow suit.
While some dove into snow, others elected to stay inside.
“[Luke Watson and I] played Marvel Rivals and Fortnite OG throughout the break,” Dayven Cuba’s brother, junior Jaxson Cuba said.
These games acted as an escape from the frigid cold and a refreshing experience that brought students closer to each other. Some enjoyed the extended break, but are anticipating sports and school to start up again.
“Break was nice, but I’m glad to get back to school and into the routine of things,” senior Tyler Green said.
