The Minecraft movie isn’t something you watch; it’s something you experience. We would like to preface this review by saying it is one that lacks a serious tone. This choice was made to reflect the tone of the movie we saw. We would also like to say we experienced this movie in an IMAX theater with an involved crowd, therefore enhancing our experience. We suggest seeing this movie in an environment similar to ours.
Why should one do that? The movie lacks the story needed to provide substance to the movie experience, however it has enough of a story to keep you interested. This movie was made to celebrate the spirit of the video game; a spirit of enjoying moments with your friends and the absurdities of the Minecraft community found on the internet, both of which the movie reflects perfectly.
The legacy of the internet on Minecraft can be seen through cameos. Specifically, the mention of the late Technoblade—a former Minecraft YouTuber who sadly passed from cancer—and Minecraft YouTuber DanTDM. DanTDM—known as the diamond minecart—became famous on YouTube for his Minecraft series, which both he and the game found increasing popularity over the years. Both cameos in the movie were met with great applause. In our theatre, you couldn’t even hear the movie while Technoblade’s character was on screen.
Moments like the cameos and already famous quotes reflect the movie’s goal of being at its best as an experience among friends—just like the video game it is adapting. When we were watching the
infamous “chicken jockey” scene, the entire audience stood up and cheered in celebration of the moment. This reaction was made possible from being around friends and the social media presence the movie had before its release.
So for the experience, we give the movie a 10/10. However, if we saw the movie alone it would be a 5.5/10. The movie was made to watch with friends which makes it a perfect movie adaptation of Minecraft.
