Running Into The New Season

The AHS cross-country team kicked off their season on September 3rd with their home meet. Along with multiple changes to all fall sporting events with the growing precautions for COVID-19, the cross-country meet was no exception. Nobody in attendance at the meet was allowed at the finish line, that included the medical tent and the teams’ campgrounds. Another change was not all runners started at the same time, instead they instituted “wave starts.” This is where smaller groups of people take off at 2-minute intervals, so the determining factor on placing was solely based on a runner’s time. Although runners were not required to wear a mask while running, they were asked to be masked and to social distance when they weren’t.

Starting off with girls’ placings Bailey Rock a senior placed 3rd overall, the next closest cowgirl was freshman Eden Bathurst who placed 8th overall, other placings were senior Allison Liby 17th, Junior Alice Bathurst at 20th, and junior Aelyn Arevalo-Pecina at 21st.

Sophomore Grant Waite leads the charge for the Abilene Boys XC Team at Clay Center.

On the boys’ side of things Sophomore Grant Waite lead the charge with a 4th place finish, following up is Junior Thurman Geissinger who placed 15th and Freshman Trevor Tovar close behind with an 18th place finish. The other Cowboys who ran included Sophomore Dayton Wuthnow 25th, Junior Toben Schwarz 36th, Junior Miqueas Mazo 44th, Sophomore Gavin Sykes 46th, Freshman Carson Woodworth 49th, Freshman Jack Hunter 53rd, Freshman Charlie Hylton 56th, and Senior Mathew Walter 60th. The next cross country meet the Cowboys and Cowgirls take on will be at Ellsworth.
