On Thursday, May 7th, an AHS Class of 2022 alumnus shared a surprising Instagram post, to the joy of KU fans, dismay of KSU fans, and ultimately, to most who know him, made sense. Secrets out, Josie Parks was Big Jay—well, one of many Big Jays. Parks, now a 2026 KU graduate, still has a connection to the high school, having served as the supervisor for several students at the Abilene City Pool for the past few years.
“I heard rumors that he was Big Jay… I never knew for sure. He was always quiet about it,” junior lifeguard Ryan McKinney said.
Interstate man of mystery has been the name of the game for Parks, even with his coworkers. However, once the secret was out, his escapades as Big Jay made no surprise to those close to him.
“It made sense because he’s so tall and charismatic; being a mascot made sense,” junior lifeguard Kit Barbieri said.
Parks is a reminder that we all wear masks; some are just blue, crimson, and gold. Make sure to check out local college games; you may just see an AHS alumnus performing on the sidelines, whether it be a soaring cheerleader (check out the KSU cheer roster… you’ll find a McGivney!), or a mysterious mascot.
