Abilene High School will present the musical “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” on November 5, 7 and 8 at the Abilene High School Auditorium.
“It’s based off a cartoon, so I feel like it’s a lot more playful, and there’s definitely a lot more laughter and overall fun to be had,” senior Simon Griffith, who plays the main character Charlie Brown, said. “It’s not too serious of a musical compared to [previous shows] Wizard of Oz or Tarzan, so I think there’s more lighthearted energy.”
“You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” first debuted as a musical in 1967, with some of its most notable songs being “Happiness” and “The Kite.” The original comic strip was created by Charles M. Schulz in 1950.
“I hope the audience feels nostalgia for the Peanuts comics they’ve read growing up, and remembers the joys and tragedies of childhood,” Assistant Director Harlie Delay said. “It’s a fun reminder that things like someone stealing your pencil can feel like the end of the world when you’re a kid. And that things like your favorite blanket can make everything okay.”
Directed by Catherine Hammer, the production is a collaborative learning environment for many. The show includes a 17-student cast, six backstage crew members, eight students in the pit orchestra, and 21 students from the stagecraft class who built the set. In addition, 11 Media and Public Relations students developed show promotion materials, and the personalized cookies offered during intermission are made by students in FCCLA.
“Everyone in the cast has been working so hard to learn and memorize choreography, lines, and music. I’m also very grateful that we have such an incredibly talented crew who have made the show so immersive with both props and lighting,” freshman Elise Jermark said. “I know that this is going to be an awesome show, and I’m so excited for the community to see it!”
Performances will take place November 5 and 7 at 7 p.m., with the final performance on Sunday, November 8 at 3 p.m. All performances will be held in the Abilene High School Auditorium.
Tickets cost $8 for adults and $5 for children. Children under 5 will be admitted for free. A coupon is also available allowing children to attend for free with the purchase of an adult ticket. Purchase tickets at the Abilene High School office beginning November 2 or at the door.
