The 2019-2020 school year has been the year for new beginnings. These new beginnings include the football team’s jamboree in Salina, the teaching staff, and a couple substitute teachers helping out for the semester. One of AHS’s new faces is Jeffrey Austin. Mr. Austin teaches our building trades and wood-working classes. Coming in to his second year of teaching, Mr. Austin is excited for the new school year and AHS is excited to see what he does.

When asked about why he wanted to become a teacher, Austin replied, “I enjoy showing students skills that will help them if they go into a skilled trade such as carpentry or cabinetmaking. Even for the students who don’t have plans to work in those areas, it is a really great skill to have.” After stepping into one of his classes, anyone can tell that he does a great job of working with his students because of his ability to help kids get hands on with their work.

Another question asked was what brought him to AHS. “I have been doing construction since I  graduated high school, and the opportunity to teach it in Abilene was something I really hoped to do someday. The timing for the job opening here was perfect,” he states. Adding on to that question, we asked what he hoped he could bring to the AHS classroom. “I hope to bring a lot of experiences that I have gotten from my military service and my jobs since graduating high school.” he explained. Mr. Austin is a great addition to the AHS community and we are anxious to see what he accomplishes in his time here.
